The History of Dedicated Game Server Hosting

Dedicated game server hosting is the place where online gaming started. Those days, the online gamers used to play on the internet by hosting the games in their standard home machines. First of all, the player had to buy the game of their choice then create a server that was supposed to be hosted and also played at home. All these happened simultaneously in the standard home PC through a dedicated server application that is similar to the one used today.

However, the home computers of users had low speeds and technical specs, and this would put a lot of stress on the machines, leading to poor server performance and gameplay. The internet providers decided to offer better and higher connections like faster broadband and even more bandwidth so that the gamers could keep up with server load, but this didn’t help a lot. This is because the data that was required for computerization was too much for the average home computer to handle comfortably and plus Australian ISP’s are among the worst performing in any developed nation.

During these first stages in online gaming, all the home computer lacked the power necessary to process the high speeds and detailed data that is needed for the online gaming and the dedicated hosting. As the games improved, other factors emerged that couldn’t be possible for home computers to handle. 3D graphics, network data sorting, and game physics couldn’t reach the players connected to the game server.

The servers used the dedicated server application, which was hosted from the home PC. The application was designed to host servers from the gamers PC. Its primary task was to collect and distribute data from all the players who were connected to the server. The information would then be sent to other players using the game server displaying all the available players and images.

The Growth of Game Servers

With the enormous growth taking place in the online gaming industry, the gamers had to look for permanent solutions to their server problems. There were LAN events taking place, Leagues and even gaming teams were now forming. The teams had players from all parts of the world, so there was a great need for fast and reliable hosting solutions. There was a lot of need for game server hosting solutions that could offer real performance using low ping. The home computers could not provide this performance so the industry adapted. The need was too large because of the size of files that online game servers were required to handle. During those times, only a maximum of 20 players could use the game server.

Currently, the number of people who can join just one online game server has significantly risen with time. Some games can now go up to 1000 players in a single game and 500,000 players on a cloud server! As time goes by, these numbers are expected to go even higher because of the growth in the industry. One game hosting provider we spoke with – Brink Hosting who specialise in Minecraft hosting told us they forecast an expansion of their server centre by five times its original capacity by mid June next year.

The only solution for the problems facing the online gaming industry was getting professional servers. The professional servers were specially made to read data and also transmit vast amounts of the information faster so that the gamers can play without facing any troubles. The game hosting companies decided to buy rack servers, and they co-located them in various data centres all over the world so that they can host online games. In the beginning, the prices for this luxury were very high, but with time, they have dropped significantly. The prices are expected to fall even more as the industry grows.

Online game hosting has come a long way. New and improved servers have been developed, making the online games enjoyable. Whether this new technology like cloud gaming is the future for gaming is still up for debate. But for the end user, it all points to easier and cheaper online gaming, and the players do not have to deal with slow unreliable servers.
